⚖️ Legal Use & Licensing

Overview

ValidEU aggregates and standardizes publicly available company and registry information across the European Union.

The service operates under the principles of the EU Open Data Directive (Directive (EU) 2019/1024) and corresponding national open-data laws (e.g. the Ustawa o otwartych danych i ponownym wykorzystywaniu informacji sektora publicznego in Poland).

ValidEU does not own or modify the underlying registry data.
It provides value-added technical access — aggregation, normalization, caching, validation and reliable delivery — not resale of data itself.

Data Sources

All registry data originates from official public institutions. ValidEU integrates, among others:

CategoryExample RegistriesSource Type
EU-wide VAT verificationVIES – VAT Information Exchange System (European Commission)Public, no key
National VAT / NIPMF "Biała Lista" API (Poland)Public API
National business registryGUS BIR (Poland), INSEE SIRENE (France), Companies House (UK)Public API / Open Data

IBAN / BIC validationOpenIBAN / Wise DirectoryPublic API
Other country-specific registriese.g. RNA (France), KVK (Netherlands – requires license)Mixed (see Docs)

Each API response and documentation entry includes a "source" or "via" field identifying the origin of the data (e.g. "source": "VIES" or "via": "GUS BIR").

Licensing and Re-Use

All data exposed through ValidEU originates from public-sector information made available under open-data or PSI (Public Sector Information) regimes. Re-use of such information, including for commercial purposes, is explicitly permitted under the Open Data Directive.

ValidEU respects each registry's technical and legal terms of access, including:

  • request-rate and daily-quota limits,
  • required source attribution,
  • exclusion of bulk redistribution or archival exports.

ValidEU does not redistribute raw registry datasets or offer data dumps. API responses are generated dynamically and limited to individual record validation and verification requests.

Commercial Model

ValidEU charges for the technical service layer, which includes:

  • unified REST API access across 27 EU member states,
  • format normalization and response caching,
  • uptime monitoring, failover, and rate-limiting,
  • developer documentation, analytics and API key management.

The fee covers infrastructure and operational costs of the service; it does not constitute a sale of public data.

Compliance and Contact

ValidEU operates in accordance with:

  • Directive (EU) 2019/1024 on open data and re-use of public-sector information,
  • GDPR (2016/679) — personal data from public registries (e.g., company officer names, addresses) is processed solely for verification purposes, cached temporarily (up to 24 hours), and not used for any other purpose or sold to third parties,
  • national open-data frameworks of participating member states.
